Audiobook Review - Greenlights - Matthew McConaughey

Alright alright alright.

Now that's out of the way, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Greenlights’, read by the great man himself with that trademark Texas drawl. It's not a typical memoir as such, but there is a chronological order to the book based on his career and journals and notes Matthew McConaughey has kept over the last 30 odd years. It's a mixture of him telling the story of his life interspersed with the philosophies and realisations that have caused him to hit all those green lights.

Particularly memorable are the tales of his childhood, with his parents in a complex relationship mixed up with violence and love. My favourite part was a year spent in Australia as a teenager, which contains many genuinely funny momments and though difficult at times, proves to be the making of him.

Another interesting section is when he moves from rom-coms to more nuanced roles. He has a great ability to look at his life and work out where the blockages are, thus allowing him to change it up and keep hitting those green lights.

You really get the sense from the book that he would be great company, and that he doesn’t have any airs and graces. He’s refreshingly honest and he can also write. Too many celebrity memoirs play it cool and you feel that you never see the real personality. Definitely don’t get that sense in this book.

He comes across as a really likeable, decent chap with an infectious and exuberant personality and I really enjoyed his company in ‘greenlights’, one of my favourite audiobooks. Ma·thyoo muh·ko·nuh·hay, you’re alright.
